A detail

It’s been a while since my last post, but things get a bit complicated with motherhood.

Anyways, it has come to my attention today a beautiful drawing held at the Cabinet du Dessins du Louvre, namely inv 34508, Recto by Louis Tocqué (1696-1772), a very refined portrait painter.

This drawing is titled Etude de main jouant de la guitare. However, I believe this hand is rather playing a viola da gamba. Besides the fact that the fingerboard is bent outwards (in guitars it tends to be flat), the strings and the nut are more relatable to the bowed instrument. Furtermore, the position of the left hand looks rather awkward when the drawing is held horizontally.

Here is the picture for you to decide.
